Phi Angle Lap Band. In an anterior–posterior (AP) projection of an abdominal Xray the band normally lies about 5cm below the diaphragm and the phi angle of the band is 45 degrees (phi angle corresponds to the angle between spinal column and the gastric band—normal range is between 4 and 58 degrees) (Figure 2A).
The phi (φ) angle is easily measured It is measured between a vertical line oriented with the spine and one along the long axis of the lap band a normal phi angle is between 4 and 58 degrees.

IntroductionTechniques and SystemsNormal Imaging Appearances After LAGB ProceduresComplicationsConclusionsBody mass index which is determined by dividing body weight in kilograms by the square of height in meters is traditionally used as a measure of obesity A body mass index between 25 and 29 kg/m2 indicates overweight an index between 30 and 39 kg/m2 obesity and an index of more than 40 kg/m2 morbid obesity (1) Onethird (338%) of the adult population in the United States.

What is normal Phi angle gastric band?
Lap band phi angle (ɸ) (A) Angle of 45° indicating good position (B) Angle greater than 58° indicating slipped band In more severe cases of band slippage the excess stomach wall herniated through the band orifice may result in swelling and obstruction at the band outlet resulting in severe dilation and ischemia of the stomach wall above.
